Good Motivational Event – count me in!

Last week I’ve spent a day on a motivational event organized by a friend of mine in London. With speakers like Les Brown, Althea Grant, Dr. Stacie NC Grant, Steve Woody and Mindy Gibbins-Klein I knew it would be a great event.

But my time is precious so before I went I asked myself, why do I want to go there and invest my time in this event. Below are my thoughts, which I would like to share with you. Continue reading

Time flies when you have fun!

When I started my adventure with Goodchange I didn’t know it will grow to 10.000 Facebook likes so quickly.

Now we are there so I decided to put together a small booklet as a gift to all of you who decided to like the Goodchange page on Facebook and get involved in it.

I want to be frank with you. I do what I do because I like it! It is a great way for me to think about life and to check my ideas with ideas of others. On the way I found out that there are quite a lot of people who are enjoying the things I am doing on Goodchange.

Now I have an extra motivation. The extra motivation is you!

As long as there is a chance to learn something new I intend to do what I started at Goodchange.

If you will be inspired, motivated or helped in any way, this is the biggest reward I could ever imagine.

Thank you for liking Goodchange! I like you back 🙂

What you can find in the booklet I call “What I learned in quotes”?

You can find some quotes about a “Good change”, “Good life”, “Good goals” and “Happiness”. But I added also your choices: “Most liked” and “Most seen”.

And as this booklet is also a little bit for me 🙂 you can find a few of “My favorites” quotes.

It is free and all you need to do is to click on the link to open the pdf version of 10.000 Facebook likes!

I really hope you will enjoy it!

Energy barrier and catalysts

This week I have heard a speech of Mr. Wang. He is a chemist and works with Shell. But he was not talking about petrol or chemical formulas. He was talking about relations and chemistry. He said that in chemistry if you want to reach a new relation between existing reactants you need to cross an energy barrier.

It is long time ago that I had my chemistry classes, but it made me think. Generally what I understood from the story is that an existing situation is bonded together by a strong energy force. If we want to change anything we need to break this bond by using activation energy first. Only when the activation energy is strong enough it can break the bond and a new state can be achieved.

Mr. Wang also said that there are some substances called catalysts that, when added to an environment, can speed up the reaction.

This is all about chemistry for now, let’s think a bit about life instead.

If we want to change anything in our life we need to go from one state to another. Like in chemistry this process needs our effort.

The amount of effort will depend on what we want to achieve on the one side and on our current state on the other site.

Have you ever been in a situation when you are putting an effort to change something and it does not work?

It happens to me regularly so I am sure you know what I am talking about.

At this point the catalyst idea kicks in. It just might be that the effort I am using to go from one state to another is not enough. Maybe I need a catalyst to speed up the process? It works like that in chemistry, could it work in real life as well?

When I think about it I am sure it can. I think that I also know some of the catalysts. The short list would consist of:

  1. Inspiration / Desperation
  2. Motivation
  3. Attitude
  4. Knowledge and skills
  5. Relations and people around us

The inspiration and desperation are basic catalysts. Both work the same way by preparing the environment for a new reaction. Inspiration or desperation are the only things that will make us want to change anything.

Motivation is the energetic catalyst, necessary to ignite our attitude towards the change. Only when our attitude is up and positively running can we do positive activities.

But when the energy barrier is huge we will need some extra catalysts. We will need knowledge and skills to fight the energy barrier. Knowledge and skills will give us the answer to the important question: how?

But what if the required knowledge and skills are out of our reach? Does it mean that the change is impossible for us?

No, we have another 2 catalysts that can help us. Relations and people around us. These 2 are the most powerful catalysts. When well used they can make the impossible happen. You see, what we can’t do, others can. It is just a question of finding the right people and building the right team.

So if you have a big dream, if you have a big goal and you are struggling to reach it, check if you have the right catalysts. If not, go and get them. This can be the only way to get through the energy barrier and achieve a new, desired state.

Self-motivational assets

Today morning I woke up to the sound of hard rain. I open my eyes and I saw it was very dark outside. Clearly a storm was passing by. I decided to wait in my bed till it would be over. One hour later when I opened my eyes again I have seen the sun shining through the window.

Why am I telling you this story? Because it was my inspiration for today’s talk.

Les Brown’s most recognizable quote is that “You have greatness within you”! I believe we all do! There are two aspects of our greatness that I would like to discuss with you today.

Firstly the fact is that we have the unique capability to change our past knowledge and experiences in assets and invest them in the present. Sometimes we are saying that a person has a wealth of knowledge and experience. I believe that we all do. Unfortunately we do not realize it too often and frequently we don’t use it as our assets. The wealth of past experiences and knowledge can be very powerful when used correctly!

Today morning when I opened my eyes for the first time I knew that the storm would pass. I knew it would not last for a long time! I was not stressed! This is the power of past experiences and knowledge invested in the present! It will help us to go through storms! It will push us through difficult times!

The second aspect of our greatness is the unique capability to see the future. Not necessarily to see the future as it will be, but to see the future as we would like it to be. It is the power of our dreams!

Our dreams are very important assets that we can invest in the present.

Our dream can be so powerful, so magnetic that we can be pulled by it through moments of doubts and lower self-confidence.

We can be pulled up by it when the path is going up the hill and we think we have no more power to climb. As long as we have our dream we will somehow find the power to make the next step and a next step and a next step…

Today morning when I decide to close my eyes and wait for storm to pass by, I could see in my mind the sun shining and the flowers looking at me with their beautiful colors and shapes. I could smell them and I could feel the warm breeze on my face. It made my last hour of sleeping very enjoyable even though outside the storm was not yet over!

What all of this has to do with motivation one can ask? Well, I realize that our assets of accumulated knowledge and experiences and capability to see the future as we want it to be can be very powerful self-motivational factors that can push us through difficulties and pull us towards our goals if we use them correctly.

So the small good change exercise for today is to learn how to invest past knowledge and experiences and our dreams to become our best self-motivational assets.

I am one of these people who need a positive push or motivation to keep going. I love when it happens. Everything becomes easier. The long list of excuses becomes shorter and a short list of reasons why I should do something becomes longer.

Do you recognize it?

Well, that’s me. I know that we all are different, but I believe there are more people like me. People who need motivation and like to be motivated.

There are many ways to „find” motivation. There are great motivational speakers like Les Brown or Tony Robins, who can touch our soul and heart. They can make us feel great and motivate us. There are great books and great seminars. All of it works!

The challenge however is, how to be motivated on request, how to be motivated now? Without waiting for the next seminar or the next speech.

The answer to this challenge is given by Jim Rohn in The Treasure of Quotes:

“The best motivation is self-motivation. The guy says, “I wish someone would come by and turn me on.” What if they don’t show up? You’ve got to have a better plan for your life.

When I was searching for my plan I found out that it is possible for me to create motivational templates. Templates that are available for use on my request, at the moment motivation is the most important to me.

How does it work? When I set myself a goal or plan an activity, I am taking time and consciously think about at least 3 reasons “why”. I sort the reasons in my thoughts to find the 3 which are most appealing to me. Then I memorize them and give it a name. It becomes my motivational template.

Then when a moment comes that my level of motivation drops, I take a short break and recall the corresponding template. I smile and go through the most appealing “why’s” I stored in the template at the moment I created it. Most of the time it works for me like magic. Within a few seconds I feel motivated and I can go further.

There are exceptions. Once in a while my motivational template does not work. When this happens it is always because the “why” list is not appealing to me anymore. There are generally 2 reasons for that:

  • I was cheating myself when I was creating my motivational template.
  • My philosophy changed and I did not recognize that a specific goal or action is no longer aligned with it.

Even though it does not work all the time, I can assure you, that all the times it does works, it makes my life much easier! The long list of excuses becomes shorter and a short list of reasons why I should do something becomes longer and I can go further…

In the end what Jim said is true:

“When you know what you want, and you want it bad enough, you will find a way to get it.”
